Umhlanga brand shoot

Our Umhlanga brand shoot followed a client with highlighted hair preparing for a summer festival by the coast, managing UV, humidity, and colour fade with our tailored routine.

Client background and coastal hair challenges

Our client had recently refreshed her highlights at a Durban salon, gearing up for a big summer festival weekend in Umhlanga. Her hair was fine, naturally light brown, and had been lifted multiple times over the past two years. She loved those cool, bright ends but always worried about losing the soft feel and crisp tone in heat and humidity. The plan needed to fit coastal weather, UV, salt air, and a lot of time outdoors.

She mentioned previous festival weekends where her blonde picked up a dull, brassy tone by the end, and the ends felt dry and rough. She didnt want another repeat, especially with photos planned for the brand shoot.

Our tailored plan for festival season blonde

We set up a routine anchored by the Brighten Care Set for gentle cleansing and tone support, with Cool Tone Gloss every second wash to keep yellow at bay. The Sun Shield Mist became her handbag staple for reapplying UV protection through the day. Since Umhlanga’s humidity can make fine hair lose shape, we dialled back the heavier masks and instead recommended a weekly Silk Repair Mask just for the mid-lengths and ends.

For ends that tangle after long beach days, we also showed her how to use the Length Oil Drop, two drops at a time, always avoiding the roots. The final touch was getting her to use a silk pillowcase on her travel nights to cut down on overnight frizz.

  • Brighten Care Set for gentle wash and tone
  • Cool Tone Gloss every 1 to 2 washes, gloves on
  • Sun Shield Mist for outdoor UV protection
  • Length Oil Drop for ends after beach or pool
  • Silk pillowcase for less friction overnight

Adjusting after the first week on the coast

Once shoot week wrapped, she let us know that the gloss timing was spot on, but she’d overdone the violet on her fringe and it picked up a slight lilac cast. We reminded her to rinse until water runs clear and to skip the violet step if her hair feels cool enough already.

She also realised that using the Sun Shield Mist more often kept her hair softer, especially midday before outdoor sets. The only slip was forgetting to cover her hair completely during one windy day, and her ends tangled up more than expected. We added a midday detangle cue with oil for future beach days.

What to take for coastal blondes

If you live or shoot on the KZN coast, plan for high UV and salty air. Keep your routine simple, and bring reapply habits into your day. Start with a gentle wash and a cool gloss, but hold back on the violet if you see even a hint of lilac. Carry a leave-in mist with UV filters and use a silk pillowcase or wrap, especially if you’re staying at hotels.

Wetting hair with clean water before swimming, then topping with leave-in, helps block some pool or sea minerals. For anyone with fine or highlighted hair, less is often more: focus on protection and gentle care, rather than layers of heavy products.
