OR Tambo travel hops

Blonde hair and frequent flying out of OR Tambo means dealing with hard water, recycled plane air and Highveld sun, all in one week. Here is how we built a simple travel care routine.

A frequent flyer facing Johannesburg’s travel trio

Our client is a regular on the Gauteng to Cape Town route, flying from OR Tambo most weeks for business and back home to Kempton Park for the weekends. Her hair is highlighted every eight weeks, and the blonde is kept cool, not icy. She noticed her hair felt dry and static after flights, and brassier after a few weeks of travel, especially in winter.

Her main concern was keeping her tone fresh and her ends soft despite the dry Highveld air, power cuts at hotels, and the hard water at home. Airport aircon and UV exposure during taxi rides were making things worse.

A care plan for planes, hard water and quick fixes

We wrote a compact care routine she could keep in her carry-on, using our Travel Care Trio: Blonde Wash Soft, Sun Shield Mist and Length Oil Drop, all under 100 ml. Her wash days matched her hotel stays, and she put a pea-sized drop of Length Oil Drop on her ends before every flight.

The Sun Shield Mist became a midday habit, especially after landing or stepping out for lunch. To cover hard water, we suggested rinsing with bottled water after hotel showers if her hair felt rough, and using the Silk Repair Mask as a once-a-week fix on weekends at home.

  • Travel Care Trio in carry-on
  • Silk Repair Mask on weekends
  • Sun Shield Mist after landing
  • Length Oil Drop before flights
  • Bottled water rinse in hotels

Tweaks after two weeks on the move

By the end of the first fortnight, we found the Length Oil Drop was best used more often: not only before flights, but also smoothed over mid-lengths before hotel sleep to tame static. The Sun Shield Mist worked as a midday hydrator, but we also added a silk wrap for overnight comfort.

Brass started creeping in a bit quicker than expected, likely from the hard hotel water. She added a Cool Tone Gloss touch-up every second wash, leaving it on three minutes max to avoid any dull cast on her lighter strands.

How other OR Tambo flyers can use this routine

If you travel often from OR Tambo and have blonde or lightened hair, start with a trio of small, travel-safe basics. Pack a gentle wash, a leave-in mist with UV filters, and a light ends oil. In Gauteng’s dry winters, static and split ends hit hard, so a silk pillowcase or wrap helps during hotel stays.

Always check your water: Johannesburg’s water is moderately hard, while Cape Town is soft. If your hair feels rough after a hotel wash, rinse with bottled water or use extra conditioner. For tone, a quick gloss every week or two can keep brass at bay between salon visits.

  • Use leave-in mist before and after flights
  • Smooth oil over lengths before hotel sleep
  • Try a silk wrap or pillowcase
  • Gloss for brass, 3 to 8 minutes only
  • Rinse with bottled water if hotel water feels harsh
