Jozi pool summer

A Johannesburg family with lightened hair needed a plan to protect their colour and softness through a Highveld pool summer. Here is how we helped them manage chlorine, UV and weekly swim habits.

A Highveld summer with a family pool and highlighted hair

Our client was a family from the leafy northern suburbs of Joburg, all with various shades of blonde or highlighted hair. School holidays meant daily swimming, from morning until late afternoon, and everyone wanted to keep their colour looking natural for the upcoming family photos and a matric dance.

The challenge: the pool is salt-chlorinated, the water is moderately hard, and the midday UV often climbs above 11. Their main worry was blonde going green or brass, split ends, and dry, tangled hair after weeks of swimming and sun.

Writing a simple routine with the right swim habits

We sat with the family at our Kramerville studio and wrote a plan to fit their summer. For all swimmers, the routine started with wetting hair from a tap or shower before getting in the pool, then misting with Sun Shield Mist for UV protection. Each person wore a hat for midday sun, with a silk wrap at night to avoid friction and frizz.

After swimming, they rinsed immediately and applied a small amount of Length Oil Drop to mid-lengths and ends, never the scalp. Once or twice a week, they used our Silk Repair Mask as a light cream mask to restore softness and prevent dryness. For those with very light highlights, we recommended a quick Cool Tone Gloss every second wash to keep yellow tones away.

  • Wet hair before swimming and apply leave-in
  • Use Sun Shield Mist before outdoor time
  • Rinse out pool water as soon as possible
  • Silk wrap or pillowcase for sleep
  • Weekly Silk Repair Mask for softness

Tweaking the plan after week one

After a week, it was clear the kids’ hair was tangling more than expected and the ends were looking dry. We added an extra rinse with Violet Soft Rinse for those with lighter pieces, and suggested combing hair with a wide-tooth comb immediately after towel-drying.

We also reminded them to use gloves during gloss or violet rinse, and to reapply Sun Shield Mist at midday if they swam more than once a day. The small step of keeping a hat by the pool was surprisingly effective at reducing sun-fade and dry scalp.

What to remember for your own Jozi pool season

If you live in Joburg or the Highveld, summer means strong UV, moderate water hardness and, for blonde hair, a real risk of green from copper in older pool plumbing. The fastest wins are usually simple: wet hair before swimming, always rinse after, and use a leave-in or Sun Shield Mist before heading outdoors.

Try a weekly Silk Repair Mask if your ends are feeling rough, and stick to lower heat when styling. A silk pillowcase helps keep mid-lengths soft and cuts down breakage. If you want a routine that fits your own family, send us a message through our contact form and our care team will help you write one.
