Summer holidays by the coast need a few extra steps to keep blonde and lightened hair soft, cool-toned and protected from salt, sun and humidity.
Salt, sand and sun on fair hair
Sea, wind and sun can leave blonde and lightened hair dry or uneven in tone. Saltwater draws out moisture and can roughen the cuticle, especially where hair is already porous from lightening.
Wet your hair with clean tap water before swimming, then apply a small amount of conditioner or leave-in. This helps your hair absorb less salt or chlorinated pool water. A gentle rinse with tap water after your swim is best, especially if your hair is very pale or freshly toned.

Humidity, frizz and local water
KZN’s summer is humid and coastal wind brings frizz, while Cape Town’s Atlantic mist and soft water can leave hair feeling slippery but sometimes flat. A small bottle of Length Oil Drop or Bond Soft Serum in your bag tames ends and smooths lengths after a swim or walk.
Blonde and highlighted hair absorbs water and minerals quickly. Most Cape Town municipal water is soft, while borehole water on holiday properties can carry iron or extra minerals that warm blonde. If your hair feels coated or looks dull, try a clarifying rinse when you’re back.
