Post-bleach calm
The first week after bleach is when lightened lengths feel most fragile, sensitive and unpredictable. Here’s how to keep blonde calm, soft and soothed right after lifting.
What bleach does in the first week
Freshly bleached hair is at its most vulnerable. The cuticle is more open, which means moisture and pigment escape faster, and hair tangles and snaps more easily, especially when wet. You might notice your hair feels rough or stretchy, and your scalp could be sensitive or itchy in the first few days after a salon visit.
This is also when toner fades quickest and any redness or itch on your scalp will show up if there was any irritation. If your hair was taken several shades lighter, it will be even more porous, and your lengths can feel dry or static, especially in Joburg or Pretoria’s dry winter air. Avoid scratching or tying hair up too tightly during this week.

Day-by-day care for post-bleach calm
Day 1 to 2: Start with gentle handling. After your professional colourist finishes the service, avoid washing hair for at least 24 hours. If your scalp feels itchy (but not broken or flaking), apply our Scalp Calm Milk as directed, but always patch test first.
Day 3 to 4: Wash with Blonde Wash Soft, keeping water cool to lukewarm. Apply Bond Soft Serum on damp lengths for leave-in bond care, and use Silk Repair Mask on mid-lengths and ends once this week for extra softness. If you need to tone, use Violet Soft Rinse for 2 to 5 minutes, don’t overdo it, especially if your hair is very pale or porous.
Day 5 to 7: Limit heat styling and always apply Bond Soft Serum before any blow-dry or ironing. Reapply Sun Shield Mist before heading out, especially in midday Highveld or coastal sun. Sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase, or try an Overnight Silk Wrap to cut down on friction.
- Apply Scalp Calm Milk if scalp feels tight or itchy
- Use Bond Soft Serum on damp hair after washing
- Repair with Silk Repair Mask once per week
- Limit heat, always use a UV protectant
- Sleep on silk or satin for less friction
Styling and salon timing tips
Book your next toner or glossing appointment 3 to 5 weeks after a major lightening to keep blonde even and bright, but don’t re-bleach too soon. Let hair settle for at least a month between blonding services. For special events like a matric dance, plan your bleach session 7 to 10 days ahead for the calmest results.
During this first week, keep styling soft. Avoid tight ponytails or buns that can stress fragile lengths. If you must heat style, use lower settings and always a heat-protecting leave-in. For soft waves, set hair in loose braids overnight. Hats and leave-in UV filters are your friend outdoors, especially from 11:00 to 15:00 when UV is strongest.
Common post-bleach problems and fixes
If hair goes fluffy, tangles, or feels rough, it’s usually dryness from an open cuticle or too much friction. Apply our Silk Repair Mask and comb gently with a wide-tooth comb. For ends that split or look rough, use Length Oil Drop sparingly, never on the scalp.
If you notice a dull lilac or grey cast after toning, you may have left violet products on too long. Wash once with Blonde Wash Soft and skip violet products for a wash or two. For persistent itch or sensitivity, stop all new products and send us a message through the contact form: we can help you tune your care or refer you to a medical professional if needed.
- For dry lengths, mask and oils help
- For lilac or dull tones, pause violet care
- For ongoing itch, patch test and consult
