Coastal holiday hair

Salt, sun and wind on the coast can leave blonde hair dry, faded or brassy. Here is a care sequence to help your colour and softness last all holiday.

How coastal holidays affect blonde and lightened hair

Coastal air is humid and salty, especially along the KZN and Cape Town shores. Saltwater lifts the cuticle of lightened hair, making it rougher and more porous, so hair tangles more, loses moisture quickly and fades faster. Sand and wind can add to this, leaving ends dry and rough.

Sun exposure is stronger at the coast, with Durban’s UV peaking at 12 and Cape Town not far behind. UV light strips toner and natural pigment, causing blonde to fade, lighten unevenly or turn brassy. Pool water is another risk: copper in pipes or pools, when oxidised by chlorine, can leave a greenish tinge on very pale hair.

What to use and when during your trip

Start with the Travel Care Trio: wash, mist and ends oil all in under-100 ml bottles. Before heading out for the day, mist hair generously with Sun Shield Mist and work a few drops of Length Oil Drop into mid-lengths and ends. Reapply mist around midday, especially after swimming or sweating.

After swimming in the ocean or pool, rinse hair with clean tap water as soon as possible. Use Blonde Wash Soft to remove salt and chlorine, then follow with Violet Soft Rinse for 2 to 5 minutes to keep brass away, use gloves and rinse until water runs clear. Twice a week, use Silk Repair Mask overnight or for at least 30 minutes to deeply hydrate.

On days with heavy sun or wind, tie hair in a silk scarf or use the Overnight Silk Wrap when sleeping to reduce friction and tangling.

  • Apply Sun Shield Mist before and during sun exposure
  • Rinse and wash out salt or pool water daily
  • Use Violet Soft Rinse as needed to tone
  • Hydrate with Silk Repair Mask twice a week

Styling and salon timing before and after your holiday

If you are planning a coastal trip, book your colour or toner service about a week before you leave. This gives the toner time to settle before it faces salt and sun, but still looks fresh for the trip.

Keep heat styling to a minimum on holiday, as flat irons and curling tongs can make dryness and frizz worse on lightened hair. If you do style, use Bond Soft Serum on damp hair before drying and always keep tools at a lower heat setting. Air-drying in a loose braid or bun is gentle and helps control frizz in the coastal humidity.

After your trip, book a care review or salon treatment to restore moisture and tone. Bring any concerns about breakage or colour fade to your colourist or to your care review appointment.

Common problems and how to fix them

Blonde hair often goes brassy or greenish after days in the pool, or feels rough and dull from salt and sun. If you notice green tones, clarify with a gentle shampoo and use a hydrating mask before your next toning step. For brassiness, use Violet Soft Rinse for a short contact time first, a little at a time avoids a purple cast, especially on very light or porous hair.

If lengths feel dry, add extra Length Oil Drop to the ends at night and wear a silk wrap or use a silk pillowcase. Persistent dryness or snapping means it is time for a deeper mask or bond-care treatment, and to review your wash and leave-in habits with us or your salon.

  • Brass: short-contact violet rinse, gloves on
  • Green: rinse, clarify, mask, then tone
  • Dryness: oil at night, silk wrap, deep mask
