Itch after colour week

An itchy scalp after your colour appointment is common, especially in the first week. I will explain why it happens, how to calm it, and when to ask for help.

Why the scalp gets itchy after colour

An itchy scalp in the week after your colour service is one of the most common questions we hear from clients with lightened or highlighted hair. The process of colouring, or especially bleaching, raises the cuticle layer and can leave your scalp feeling dry, tight, or sensitive. In South Africa, salon colours often contain ingredients like ammonia, hydrogen peroxide or even para-phenylenediamine (PPD), which can irritate the skin for several days after.

Our local climate plays a role too. Gauteng’s dry Highveld air and frequent power cuts can leave homes less humid, so your scalp dries out even faster. If you’ve been colouring for years, your scalp may still react differently each time, especially with a change in season or water type. Colour should never burn, blister, or leave your scalp flaking heavily: ongoing or severe symptoms mean you should see your doctor.

What to do at home when your scalp feels itchy

Start with a gentle approach. If you feel mild itching or tightness (but no rash, oozing or broken skin), avoid scratching or washing with hot water. Use a mild, low-suds shampoo such as our Blonde Wash Soft and rinse thoroughly, making sure no product is left behind. Pat your scalp dry with a clean towel, no rubbing.

You can apply a soothing, lightweight scalp product like Scalp Calm Milk on dry, intact skin. Always do a patch test on the inside of your arm first to check for sensitivity. Wear loose styles and avoid heavy dry shampoo, hats, or hair sprays for a few days. If you swim, rinse with fresh water immediately after and protect your scalp from direct sun using a hat or a spritz of Sun Shield Mist.

  • Wash gently with lukewarm water
  • Avoid scratching or heavy scalp massage
  • Use Scalp Calm Milk only after testing it
  • Let your hair air dry if possible

When to call your colourist or see a professional

If your scalp is burning, weeping, blistering, or the itch lasts longer than one week, you need to contact your colourist or a dermatologist. Most permanent hair colour instructions recommend a skin allergy test 48 hours before every service, even if you have coloured before. Allergic reactions can develop even after years without problems.

Let your colourist know exactly what happened, when it started, and what you used on your scalp. Take clear photos in good lighting to show them. If you are worried about a reaction to PPD or similar, ask your colourist to check the ingredient list and talk you through alternatives or patch testing in future. Never colour your hair again until you know it is safe for you.

  • Persistent or severe itch
  • Rash, swelling or blisters
  • Broken or weeping skin
  • Trouble sleeping from discomfort

Mistakes we see often and how to avoid them

Many clients try to scrub the itch away or use harsh clarifying shampoos right after a colour service. This only strips more moisture and can make irritation worse. Another mistake is piling on heavy oils or thick conditioners at the roots, hoping for relief, these can clog follicles and lead to more itching or even small breakouts.

One more thing: do not use home remedies like vinegar, bicarb, or essential oils on a sensitive scalp unless recommended by your colourist. Stick to gentle, tested products. If in doubt, send us a message through our contact form or book a care review at one of our studio or mall showrooms. We are always glad to talk you through a routine that helps your scalp recover comfortably.

  • Do not scrub or scratch your scalp
  • Avoid harsh home remedies
  • Keep heavy products away from roots
  • Ask for help sooner rather than later
