Fragile lengths after bleach

Bleached hair is fragile: the cuticle lifts, moisture escapes and ends feel straw-like or snap. Here is how I help clients care for lengths after lightening.

Why bleached hair goes fragile so quickly

When hair is lightened in the salon, the bleach lifts not only the colour but also some of the hair’s inner structure. The outer cuticle scales are raised and become more open, which means the hair loses moisture fast, tangles more easily and is vulnerable to snapping when wet.

Porous hair after bleach acts like a sponge: it soaks up water, pigment and whatever you put on it, but it cannot hold onto them for long. This is why toner and gloss fade quickly, and why dryness or rough texture shows up within days of leaving the salon. If your hair feels brittle or straw-like, you are seeing the impact of lost structure as well as dryness.

What to do at home for soft lengths

Start with gentle habits. Use a low-suds shampoo like our Blonde Wash Soft, which cleanses without stripping. After washing, gently squeeze out water with a soft towel, do not rub or twist. Apply a light cream mask, such as our Silk Repair Mask, once a week on damp mid-lengths and ends. Leave in for the full recommended time before rinsing.

Work a bond-care leave-in serum, like our Bond Soft Serum, through damp hair after each wash. Use a pea to almond-sized amount, focusing on fragile zones. Minimise brushing when wet. Use a wide-tooth comb and start at the ends. Sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase or wrap hair in a silk scarf at night to reduce friction and prevent breakage.

Signs Your Lengths Need Salon Repair

If your lengths are snapping, shedding more than usual or feel rough despite good care, book a review with a professional. Your colourist should check for breakage patterns, uneven porosity and signs of over-processing. Ask about in-salon bond treatments or a trim to remove the weakest ends.

If you are struggling to keep toner or gloss fresh, bring this up with your stylist. They can recommend the right tone-refresher for your hair’s condition and advise how to pace future lightening. For scalp discomfort or patchy colour, always consult the salon first. If your scalp is itchy, flaking or broken, see a doctor or dermatologist before your next colour.

Mistakes I see with fragile blonde hair

Using too much purple or violet shampoo, or leaving it on for too long, can make porous ends look dull, grey or lilac instead of bright. Always follow the time on the bottle, rinse until clear, and use gloves if recommended.

Another common mistake is rough towel drying or trying to detangle soaking wet hair with a fine brush. This is when breakage and split ends start. Avoid using hot flat irons or curling tongs on fragile, lightened hair until it feels stronger, and always use a leave-in with UV filters before going into the sun, especially in Highveld summer.
