Glow note

Coastal glare and tone

Salt, sun and wind on the South African coast can leave blonde hair rough, brassy or dulled. Here’s how I keep fair hair clear and soft after days at the sea.

Why coastal glare changes fair hair

Coastal holidays are tough on blonde and lightened hair. The sun at the coast, especially in Durban or Cape Town, hits hard. In summer, the UV index in Durban can reach 12 and Cape Town goes up to about 10. Sea salt roughens the hair fibre, lifting the cuticle, and sea wind makes tangling and breakage worse.

If your hair is lightened or highlighted, it is already more porous. That means it grabs and loses water and pigment quickly. Salt and sun speed up how fast the fresh toner fades and can leave the hair dull or yellowed. Even natural fair hair can go dry and lose its soft shine after long days outdoors.

Care steps to follow after sea and sun days

After every swim, rinse your hair as soon as you can with clean tap water. This washes out salt, sand and chlorine and stops them drying out your lengths. If you are swimming in a pool, wet your hair with clean water and apply a little leave-in or conditioner first: this means your hair absorbs less pool water. For beach days, our Sun Shield Mist helps by adding a dry, light layer of UV filter. Hats help a lot too.

At home, start with a gentle wash like Blonde Wash Soft. If the hair feels rough or tangles, work a silk mask like our Silk Repair Mask through the mid-lengths and ends, leave for 5 to 10 minutes, then rinse fully. If you see yellow or brassy tones, apply a violet rinse or Cool Tone Gloss for 3 to 8 minutes, wearing gloves. Rinse until the water runs clear. Use only as often as needed, overdoing violet can leave a faint lilac or dull look, especially on very pale or porous hair.

Finish with Length Oil Drop on the ends, warmed in your palms, or Bond Soft Serum on damp hair before a low-heat blow-dry. A silk pillowcase or wrap at night cuts down friction.

  • Rinse hair with clean water after swimming
  • Use UV protection and hats outdoors
  • Gentle shampoo and weekly repair mask
  • Violet gloss only as needed
  • Finish with oil or bond serum on ends

When beach brass needs studio toning

If your hair feels dry or the tone looks off after a coastal trip, book a care review at our Kramerville studio or nearest showroom bay. Bring a photo in natural light to show your colourist or us exactly what has changed.

Ask your colourist about a professional gloss or toner if yellow or orange tones won’t shift at home. For hair that feels rough or keeps snapping, ask about an in-salon bond treatment and how to safely use leave-in care between visits. If you have sensitive skin or the scalp is itchy, flaking or broken, check with your doctor or dermatologist before using new products.

  • Bring recent photos of your hair in daylight
  • Ask about glossing or bond treatments
  • Speak up about scalp sensitivity

Common slip-ups after coastal stays

People often skip the rinse after swimming, or use too much violet gloss hoping for a quick fix. This can leave a dull grey or lilac cast, especially on very light or porous hair. Sometimes you forget to reapply UV mist at midday or pack a hat for beach walks. It is easy to let hair dry in the sun, but that can make ends rough and dry.

Another slip is brushing wet, tangled hair too quickly. Wet, lightened hair is weakest and can snap, use a wide-tooth comb and work from the ends up. If you have hard water at your holiday stay, check if it’s from a borehole, minerals like iron can warm blonde. A test is the only way to know for sure.

  • Don’t skip post-swim rinses
  • Use violet gloss with care
  • Handle wet hair gently
  • Protect against sun and water minerals
