Glow note
Wash less, rinse better
Washing less often and rinsing more thoroughly helps blonde and lightened hair stay softer, brighter and less brassy between salon visits.
Why wash less and rinse better matters for blondes
Blonde and lightened hair absorbs water and products much quicker than natural hair, because the cuticle is raised and some of the internal structure has been lost during bleaching. That means toner, pigment and even moisture can escape faster, making hair feel dry, look dull or turn yellow or brassy between washes.
Every shampoo lifts the cuticle slightly and pulls some pigment away, especially just after a fresh colour or toner. If you wash too often, your colour won’t last as long. A thorough rinse is just as important: leftover shampoo, conditioner or purple products can make hair heavy, sticky or uneven in tone. Gentle, low-suds washes and careful rinsing keep fair hair healthy and soft.

How to wash and rinse at home
Start by spacing out your washes, aiming for every 3 to 4 days if you can. Between washes, use a dry shampoo if needed and protect hair from sweat or salt with a leave-in mist. When you do wash, use lukewarm water and a gentle, low-suds shampoo like our Blonde Wash Soft. Focus shampoo on the scalp, not the lengths. Massage gently with your fingertips, never your nails.
Rinse for longer than you think you need: at least one full minute, making sure water runs clear. If you use a violet or glossing product (like our Cool Tone Gloss or Violet Soft Rinse), follow the exact contact time, then rinse until all traces are gone. Always finish with a soft towel blot, never rough rubbing. If you swim or sweat, rinse and condition straight after to remove salt or chlorine.
- Wash less often, every 3 to 4 days is ideal
- Rinse thoroughly, especially after purple products
- Use gentle, low-suds shampoo on the scalp
- Avoid hot water and rough towels
What to ask your colourist and when to get help
Ask your colourist about the best wash routine for your exact blonde or highlighted shade. If your hair feels dry, sticky or changes colour quickly, bring a list of your home products and habits to your next appointment. Your stylist can spot if you’re overwashing, using too much purple, or if your water might be affecting your colour.
If you notice a sudden change, like greenish hints after swimming, or if the scalp becomes itchy or sore, book a care review with us or see a professional. Very dry, brittle or breaking hair also needs a pro’s advice. Never try to fix major colour or texture problems on your own at home.
Common mistakes with washing and rinsing blonde hair
One mistake we see is washing too often out of habit or because hair feels limp. Lightened hair can usually go longer between shampoos, try a silk wrap or pillowcase at night to keep hair fresher. Another is rushing the rinse: leftover product, especially anything violet, can leave a chalky build-up or unwanted tint.
Overloading with too many products is also common. Stick with one system for a few weeks so you can see what really works. And remember, hard water (mostly from boreholes in SA) or swimming pools can alter colour, always rinse well after exposure.
- Washing too frequently
- Not rinsing long enough
- Using too much purple or gloss
- Overloading products without giving them time
- Ignoring water quality or pool effects
