Ends care without grease
Lightened ends need extra care to stay soft, but oily roots are a common worry. Here’s how to keep your blonde lengths smooth without the grease.
Why blonde ends dry out quickly
When hair is lightened or highlighted, the process lifts the cuticle and removes some of the inner structure. This makes the ends more porous and fragile, so they lose moisture easily and can feel rough or straw-like. The problem is even worse if you heat-style often or live somewhere dry like Joburg in winter.
Blonde or very light ends also tangle faster, snap more easily when wet, and soak up any product much quicker than untreated hair. The worry for many of us is that anything rich enough to soften those dry bits will leave roots looking greasy or heavy. The trick is to protect the oldest, driest part of your hair, the ends, without weighing down the rest.

How to care for your ends at home
Start by washing with a gentle shampoo like our Blonde Wash Soft, and always wring out excess water before adding any leave-in product. On damp hair, smooth a pea to almond-size amount of Bond Soft Serum from the mid-lengths down. Don’t take it anywhere near your scalp, that’s the main place oils and serums can make hair look greasy.
For daily softness, warm 2 to 4 drops of our Length Oil Drop between your palms and gently press onto the very tips, again keeping well away from the roots. The trick is to layer light products in small amounts. Throw hair over your shoulder or split into sections if its thick. On dry days, a midday touch-up is fine if your ends feel rough.
- Keep oils and serums off the scalp
- Only use a tiny amount each time
- Apply to towel-dried or dry ends
- Comb through gently with fingers
When to ask your colourist or stylist
If your ends still feel brittle or split after careful home care, bring it up at your next salon visit. Ask your colourist to check for breakage, and whether a trim is needed. Sometimes regular snipping is the only way to stop splits from travelling up the hair.
Let your stylist know you’re worried about greasy roots, so they can recommend the right balance of light leave-ins and heavier masks. If you’ve had a major lightening, ask about professional bond care or deep treatments to help rebuild the structure between appointments. For advice between visits, you can book a care review at our Kramerville studio or any mall bay through our contact form.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
We often see people using far too much oil or mask in the hope it will fix dry ends overnight, but this usually just weighs hair down or leaves a sticky residue, especially on fine hair. Another slip is forgetting to keep oil and serum only on the bottom section, so it creeps up and flattens the roots.
One small detail: skipping regular trims makes even good products less effective, because split ends can’t be glued back together. If you’re ever in doubt about a product, bring it to your next review, our team is always happy to check your routine and suggest tweaks that suit your hair and your city’s climate.
- Never rub oil into the scalp
- Don’t overload on rich products
- Trim split ends every 2 to 3 months
- Book reviews if unsure about your routine
